Entry #25 Here Comes Hypothyroidism
My Story - Life After Cancer
Wednesday, 20 May 2009 00:00

It wasn’t until my second thyroid surgery that I begin taking thyroid medication.  My initial dose was 100 micrograms once per day.  This was calculated by my weight.  My TSH levels before the surgery were averaging around 0.8 uIU/ml.  After the surgery my TSH slowly began to elevate....

Entry # 27 Trying to Move on With Life
My Story - Life After Cancer
Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:00

Well, three weeks after starting my new dose of thyroid meds (137 micrograms) I am feeling significantly better.  My afternoon nap isn’t required to make it through the day now.  I’m actually able to make it through the entire day with energy to spare.  I’m schedule to meet with my endocrinologist at the end of the month for blood work.  I’m very curious to see where my TSH levels are now with this new dose of thyriod medication….

Entry # 28 A Switch in Health Insurance
My Story - Life After Cancer
Wednesday, 01 July 2009 00:00

It’s the beginning of July and no doctor appointment yet.  I have had a change of health insurance and I am still figuring out the new system.  Now that I have a “pre-existing condition” I am curious how this may affect my health coverage.  I didn’t have any laps of insurance so hopefully I am fully covered.  Because I have had thyroid cancer I’m sure this will always come up with insurances....

Entry #29 A Trip to Arizona
My Story - Life After Cancer
Friday, 10 July 2009 00:00

Summer traveling time is here!  Who says having no thyroid will slow you down!?!  I just took a trip to Arizona and had a blast.  My wife and I spent a couple days up in the remote mountains by Flagstaff.  We went on numerous hikes and four wheeling adventures into the far backcountry.   Some beautiful views I must say.

Entry # 30 TSH Levels are in the Zone
My Story - Life After Cancer
Saturday, 01 August 2009 00:00

Off to my general doctor.  It's been awhile, about 3 months, since my last visit with any doctors.  My thyroid function labs were taken and my TSH is now 0.1 uIU/ml.  So now I'm running a little bit hyper.  My endocrinologist's goal for my TSH levels is between 0.1 to 0.4 uIU/ml in order to provide good thyroid cell suppression.  So I'm right on.   I do feel some of the hyper symptoms like being shaky, mild anxiety, hot feeling, and sometimes it's difficult to sleep at night but it's only occasionally.  I will be seeing my endocrinologist in two months for an ultrasound and lab tests to monitor thyroglobulin levels.  I will talk with him about these symptoms and see if moving from 137 mcg to 125 mcg would be a good idea.

I get a lot emails regarding the different types of thyroid hormone medications available.  So I wrote an article that outlines the various medications.  This overview of thyroid medications is useful to get a general idea of the different types of thyroid hormone supplements.  I hope it helps.

The summer is coming to an end and fall hurricane season is starting.  I decided to do a little last bit of traveling.  I hit up a zoo while I had some extra time and I just loved the aquarium exhibit.   The sea turtles were amazing!  Thought I would take a picture to share with everyone.
