My wife and I decided to go on a Caribbean cruise for Christmas.  We just wanted to get away from all of life’s challenges.  It would be nice to enjoy sometime together before I go under the knife.  Boy was it a blast!!

Entry # 14 Results from the Hemithyroidectomy: The Dreaded Phone Call

As I laid on our couch going in and out of sleep my cell phone rang.  It was a number from Georgia…I knew it was my surgeon with the results from my biopsy.  My heart race as I reach for the phone.  My surgeon went straight to the point “the pathology report shows stage one papillary carcinoma.”  My heart just fell out of my chest.  Yet again, I was speechless. I was now living my nightmare.  I asked myself, how could I possibly have thyroid cancer?  But I did have thyroid cancer....

So my wife and I were off to Georgia for my second thyroid surgery.  This surgery was basically completing my first surgery.  The surgeon was going to go through the same neck incision and take out the remaining thyroid....

Entry #16 Follow-up with Otolaryngology and Endocrinology: Yet More Bad News

So it is three weeks after my two thyroid surgeries.  I've been healing well and feeling good.  Today are two follow up appointments. My first appointment was with the endocrinologist.  He didn't waist anytime telling me the bad news....

Entry # 17 Preparation for Radioactive Iodine Treatment: The Low Iodine Diet

In order to prepare for radioactive iodine 131 radiation treatment one has to have a low iodine diet for about two weeks prior to the treatment.  Apparently, this helps the radioactive iodine get absorbed into the thyroid cells.  This of course will make the treatment successful….
